Bad Beat is a 2D Texas Hold’em Poker RPG. Traditional social and psychological elements from poker have been gamified in this experience to create a deep and strategic RPG like no other! 

This game features Texas Hold'em poker with a classic poker deck, but also integrates Gambler Stats that manipulate Wealth, Luck, Intuition, and Threat, letting players bend their opponents to their will! Players can also take social actions, including Bantering, Bluffing, and Calling Bluffs, causing their opponents to gain Pressure Bar and give Tells about the quality of their hand.

Create or join an online lobby and scavenge the city streets, challenging other players and bots to Poker Battles as you grow smarter and stronger. By leveling up and purchasing equipment, you can increase your Gambler Stats to perform better in poker battles and fight through the three area bosses. Each of the Gambler Stats has a unique effect in battle, encouraging players to strategize about what would work best for their playstyle. 

Bad Beat serves as a gamified way to introduce the intricacies of real-life poker, while also providing the player with an engaging world that helps to supplement the poker gameplay. Online poker games generally do not allow you to take social actions such as bantering, but due to the gambler stats system and the RPG elements, these mechanics help to elevate the gameplay, and will also help the player to grow as a poker player in real life!

Developer Note:

This game project was created in 8 weeks by two intern developers, working on-site in Bangkok, Thailand, at Varisoft Co., Ltd.

Assigned to design and program a Poker RPG game from scratch in Unity 6, both Ruj and I worked together to create Bad Beat, the game presented here! Bringing this game to fruition tested our game development skills, our communication, and our dedication. We are incredibly proud to present this novel Poker RPG experience, and we hope that you enjoy playing it as much as we enjoyed creating it!
